Smallpox is a deadly infectious disease caused by virus. If infected with smallpox virus, even if patients are fortunate to heal, they may become blind due to corneal ulcers. The vast majority will also have permanent scars on skin. It is estimated that a total of about 300-500 million people died of smallpox during 1900-2000. Vaccination can effectively prevent smallpox infection for almost lifelong. There is no new smallpox case in the whole world since 1978.
